Port Stanley Driving Information

Driving is on the left side of the road.

Port Stanley Airport rental cars may be either automatic OR manual transmission. Make sure to verify when booking if you are not comfortable with a manual transmission.

Your local drivers' licence is required.

An International Drivers' Permit (or IDP) may be required, especially if your local drivers' licence is in a language other than the local language (you may inquire when you pick up your car).

Both East and West Falklands have excellent internal road systems linking key settlements and areas of interest. Outside of Stanley the majority of roads are unsurfaced (gravel), and therefore require a vehicle capable of dealing with unfurnished surfaces. All rental vehicles are 4WD and suitably equipped for Falkland Island roads but rental companies do not permit off-road usage. Vehicles may be manual or automatic.

The Falkland Islands are a relatively easy drive but be careful with excessive speed on gravel roads and watch for wandering livestock and wildlife. Hirers must be aware that there are no vehicle recovery services on the Islands.
