The airport is named to honour politician Air Marshall Eduardo Gomes.

In 2012, Manaus Airport served 3,126,179 passengers, making it the 16th busiest airport in the country.

In preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, MAO Airport got a second runway and new terminal in December 2013.
