The airport is named for an important date in Angola's history. Quatro de Fevereiro means 4th February in Portuguese, an important national holiday that marks the start of the armed struggle against the colonial Portuguese regime in 1961.

As early as 2017, LAD Airport will be replaced by the new Angola International Airport, currently under construction.
